Veteran Singer-Actress Sulakshana Pandit Passes Away at 71

Mumbai, November 6, 2025 – Bollywood’s beloved 1970s star, playback singer and actress Sulakshana Pandit, breathed her last on Thursday evening at the age of 71. The news was confirmed by her brother, renowned music composer Lalit Pandit of the Jatin-Lalit duo, who revealed she suffered a sudden cardiac arrest around 8:00 PM at Nanavati Hospital in Juhu.

Sulakshana Pandit

Born on July 12, 1954, in Raigarh, Chhattisgarh, into a family steeped in music—niece of classical legend Pandit Jasraj and sister to composers Jatin-Lalit and actress Vijayta Pandit—Sulakshana began her journey as a child singer. At just nine, she lent her voice alongside Lata Mangeshkar for the iconic “Saat Samundar Paar Se” in the 1967 film Taqdeer.

Her acting debut came in 1975 with the suspense thriller Uljhan, opposite Sanjeev Kumar, marking the start of a glittering on-screen career. She starred in hits like Sankalp, Hera Pheri, Apnapan, Khandaan, and Phaansi, sharing the frame with superstars such as Jeetendra, Rajesh Khanna, Vinod Khanna, Shashi Kapoor, and Shatrughan Sinha. She even ventured into Bengali cinema with Bandie (1978), paired with Uttam Kumar.

As a singer, Sulakshana’s melodious voice shone in timeless tracks like “Tu Hi Sagar, Tu Hi Kinara” (which won her a Filmfare Award), “Bekarar Dil Tu Gaye Ja”, and duets with Kishore Kumar. She recorded in Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Oriya, and Gujarati, and released a ghazal album Jazbaat in 1980.

Sulakshana’s life, however, was touched by personal sorrow. Deeply in love with co-star Sanjeev Kumar during Uljhan, she proposed marriage, but he turned her down, still heartbroken over Hema Malini. Devastated after his death in 1985, she never married and gradually withdrew from the industry. In later years, she battled health issues, including a hip fracture from a bathroom fall that required multiple surgeries, and lived a quiet life.

In a poignant twist, Sulakshana passed away on November 6—the exact 40th death anniversary of Sanjeev Kumar, who died on the same date in 1985.

Her funeral is scheduled for Friday, November 7, at 12:00 noon. Tributes poured in from fans and industry peers, remembering her as the “voice that won hearts” and a graceful talent of Hindi cinema’s golden era.

Rest in peace, Sulakshana ji. Your songs will echo forever. 🎶
